You've seen the movie . . .
There are a few of movies showing in theaters this summer to take your children to see. Some are sequels to movies that have already proven their box-post appeal, like Cars 2 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. It has been peculiarly exciting to see the increasing number of great children’s books that have been brought to life – and to an expanded audience – at the silver screen theater.
One that will hopefully bring new readers to an older classic is Mr. Popper’s Penguins. New to theaters this summer, the enlist, written by Richard Atwater in 1938, is a charmingly funny story of a man who paints houses and hangs wallpaper by day and by edge of night wishes to be a Polar explorer. His life is turned upside down when a penguin arrives in the correspondence. From one penguin living in the icebox, Mr. Popper’s household expands to a dozen birds who become "Popper’s Performing Penguins." Even after more than 70 years in stamp, the antics of the penguins can make kids laugh out loud. As with most movie adaptations, the silent picture and the book differ in their details, so the book should be a new adventure even if you have seen the Jim Carrey movie. This lyrics works especially well as a chapter-a-night read-aloud for a wide age range.
