Here's how cooks get their recipe collections under control

Pat Jones struggles to find ways to sort out the many recipes she compulsively collects.

Jones isn't alone.

Some cooks simply search through stacks of recipes every opportunity they need one. But others have developed systems that control recipe chaos.

About 10 years ago, Julia Kearney calm all the favorite family recipes from her mother's cookbooks and created her own family cookbook.

“It is in MasterCook style, so I was able to print out copies for immediate family members,” she says. “Most of the recipes were illustrated with pictures of us as kids growing up, pictures of the personally who gave us the recipe, pictures of the first time we enjoyed the recipe, etc. It also has notes about where the recipe came from.”

Kearney is now updating the report and adding current pictures, such as one for banana oatmeal bread, a favorite of her nephew when he was inexperienced.

“The recipe now shows a picture of my nephew as a baby and his son at about the same age. My stepmother says that her bridge and bunco groups always arrive that cookbook off the shelves and ask her about different family members,” she says.
