Money-making VHS scoreboard a go -- for now

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso Community Schools will greenlight the initiation of an electronic display scoreboard at the high school field in time for the first Vikings football adventurous on Aug. 19 -- and ask questions later.

The School Board on Thursday unanimously approved the ordination of a $250,000 "multimedia display board" with instant replay and messaging capability.

Corporate advertising commitments of $275,000 over the next five years are in pointer and will reimburse the initial outlay, which will come from Valparaiso High School athletic segment funds, board member James Jorgensen said.

The board raised concerns about the deficiency of community and board discussion of the project in its early stages earlier this year and voted to put forward formation of an oversight committee on the project.

District employees learned of the revenue-generating capabilities of advertising via scoreboards at a forum in April and initiated solicitation of donor commitments for such a scoreboard at Viking Field, Jorgensen said.
