Concert Review: Mastodon at the Kool Haus in Toronto

While they’ve came a fancy from Atlanta to Friday night’s packed show at Kool Haus, the band still like better to keep it simple onstage. There was no pyrotechnics, face-paint or elaborate costuming — by the skin of one's teeth four guys, multiple guitars, a large drum kit and a white banner with the band’s name on it in rural lettering. Not that the fans needed to be reminded who they were there for. Metal fans are among the most loyal fans of any tuneful genre, and there were wearing Mastodon t-shirts, sweatshirts, ball caps and beanies. One woman was even wearing a furry, tusked mastodon mask, which must have been pretty sweaty by the end of the night. Not wasting moment on introducing themselves or the songs, save lead singer Brett Hinds occasionally yelling out “Toronto, Ontario!” in-between growls, the quartet barreled through a prolix, hits-packed set. A maelstrom of bodies quickly formed at the front of the venue while mushroom clouds of smoke hung throughout.
