I have not tried any of these lenses, but read on two (Tamron 17-50 XR with the cover or the Tokina 50-135) both are F/2.8. I must make a decision by tomorrow if I can order.

I do not have either the target, but I would go with the 50-135. It has a little more limited.
I do not know what purpose that came with your D80, but if it was a kit lens, for example 18-55, 17-50 is not great improvement.
