Lens, standard zoom for a Nikon D90?

I am researching a ideal lens to use on my new Nikon D90. To ask an open ended question which lens is the best?
Main Choices:

Nikon
24-85f/2.8 AF Zoom-NIKKOR 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IFQuick Purpose $744.95
16-85f/3.5 AF-S


Well to start it off the f/2.8 fissure are expensive because they allows you to use a faster shutter speed, which is great for sports. Of the list you gave the Nikon 24-70 and the 17-55 are the worst by far. But I would stay away from them just cause

which matters more? lens speed or focal length?

im looking at buying an ultrawide lens for my nikon d50.

im deciding between the tokina 11-16mm at f2.8 or the tokina 12-24mm f4. ken rockwell's plot says the 11-16 is much better optically than the 12-24mm, but im not basing my decision

The only things that put me off is the Tokina completely-angle converter (nearly valueless), and the tacky aluminum case with key that screams out "Costly" to thieves at work. But then again, the price your getting it at is hard to beat, and
