Handy to know

The Florence national is called the Father of the Blues for a reason. Here are tidbits from Handy's life and career every festivalgoer should remember, culled from the University of North Alabama's Special Collections and Handy's autobiography, “Sire of the Blues.”

The log cabin where William Christopher Handy was born Nov. 16, 1873, and raised still stands at 620 W. College St. in Florence as a library and museum.

Handy was exposed to music first at Lofty St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Florence, where his father and his grandfather served as pastors, as well as through stamp. But his family wasn't keen on him learning an instrument — Handy's father even made him return a guitar he had saved to buy and swop it for a dictionary. Handy later joined a blues band and got his hands on a cornet.

After high university, in 1892, he almost became a teacher in Birmingham. The poor pay changed his mind and instead he worked for a hose works plant in Bessemer. There, he formed the Lauzetta Quartet, but trips to Chicago and St. Louis were busts. By himself, Handy headed to Evansville, Ind., where he joined a new band that traveled to adjacent states. It was in Henderson, Ky., where he met Elizabeth Price, and they married July 19, 1896.
